History of Shibpur Sai Baba Temple

The Shibpur Sai Baba Temple, located in Nadia’s Nakashipara village, West Bengal, has a fascinating history that dates back to 1850. It was established by Ramdas Biswas, a wealthy villager, in the compound of his house for daily prayers. However, after 1920, prayers stopped for unknown reasons, and the temple became overgrown with dense bushes, becoming a habitat for venomous snakes.

In 1992, a miraculous event occurred when a neem tree sprouted near the dilapidated structure, causing the snakes to disappear. In 1999, Sai Baba appeared in the dream of Amit Biswas, Ramdas’s great-grandson, urging him to revive the temple’s worship. Following this divine message, Amit cleaned the temple area and established a clay idol of Sai Baba, restarting the daily prayers.

Miracles began to unfold, including healing of chronic illnesses and fulfillment of devotees’ wishes. This inspired the villagers to support and protect the temple. In 2003, Amit formed the Nadia-Shibpur-Sai-Sadguru Samity to rebuild the temple and contribute to social causes.

A human-sized fiberglass idol of Sai Baba was later donated by renowned sculptor Subir Paul, who experienced a spiritual connection while crafting it. The temple, now under a thatched bamboo structure, hosts daily pujas, bhajans, and aarti in Bengali, spreading messages of faith and unity.

The temple also promotes social harmony by involving people from all castes in distributing prasada, fostering a spirit of equality. Annually, a five-day Sai festival is celebrated in April, attracting devotees seeking blessings and spiritual solace. The committee continues to seek support for constructing a permanent temple structure, believing in Sai Baba’s teachings of faith and patience.

It has also been educating the community about the importance of maternal health, ensuring that pregnant women receive proper medical care and nutrition. In addition, the Samity actively promotes the education of girl children, encouraging families to send their daughters to school and helping to break the cycle of gender inequality.

Recognizing the challenges faced by unemployed youth, the Samity has been campaigning against drug addiction, working tirelessly to create a healthier and more productive community. It also addresses social issues such as dowry, advocating for a society free from harmful traditions and practices.

Over the past five years, the Samity has organized approximately 20 health camps, providing free clinical support to elderly residents.
